So said Oscar Wilde.
I have never before had much of a reason to research the writings of Oscar Wilde.
Nor even, if I'm honest, to give much thought to anyone by the name of Oscar.
But I thought this quotation quite apt today, given the birth yesterday of my new nephew: Oscar Benjamin Watkins (of the all important weight of 7lb 1oz).
Many Congratulations to Ruth and Graham (to whom the Oscar for this year's Best Production has been deservedly awarded). They were, and are, quite rightly, chuffed.
What better reason also to post my first blog entry in over a year (a shameful time delay - so shameful in fact that having logged on - at the second attempt, due to me momentarily forgotten my own password - I see that the editing screen looks entirely different from how I remember. I'll have to have a look around in a minute, and blow the dust off this long-too-idle a facility).
Meantime, however, back to Oscar. He has, I'm sure his parents would acknowledge, been a long-time awaited. But he's going to be a great addition to the family. The proud parents were all smiles and glowing pride last night on the videophone, and rightly so. Michele and I were remembering the first days after the arrival of our first child, Jack - the sudden realisation of the huge responsibility that has now come into being certainly, but also the many exciting experiences, feelings, and memories to be made in the time ahead.
I hope they cherish this moment, and the ones to come. Jack is now 7. Hardly old yet, but the years just fly by.
It's unfortunate that, being so far away, we will only get to see Oscar in person periodically. He will grow, and change fast. But hopefully Graham and Ruth won't mind us dropping in via Skype every now and again. If only to witness from the other end the occasional chaos that comes from now having a child in the house!
We're very happy for you all, and can't wait to meet your little prize!
